Because PNG keeps every pixel, the resolution you choose has a much bigger effect on file size here than it does on the JPG side: nothing gets thrown away afterwards to claw space back. A PDF page has no pixel size of its own, so it's redrawn at whatever dpi you pick, at full lossless size.

That's the actual trade-off, not a style preference: pick PNG when the page is line art, a technical drawing or a document where fine print has to stay pixel-exact; switch to JPG for an ordinary photographed or scanned page, where the eye won't catch the difference but the file size will be smaller.
