The file is encrypted with AES-256, not just flagged as read-only. Without the password there is nothing to read: not by us, not by a PDF reader, not by someone who copies the file off a shared drive. Printing, copying text and adding notes stay allowed once it is open, so the document still behaves like a normal PDF for whoever has the password.
We do not keep your password. That is the honest and the annoying part in one: lose it and the file is gone for good, because there is no copy anywhere to look it up in. Write it down somewhere before you send the file on.
A password only gates the content — the file's metadata (author name, software, edit history) is still readable by anyone who opens it. Want that gone too? Remove PDF metadata strips it first.
